The owners of Eastgate Shopping Centre, Liberty Two Degrees (L2D) have committed to embracing positive change for the environment by pioneering sustainable practises within their iconic retail portfolio. In support of this strategy, Eastgate Shopping Centre will systematically phase out single-use plastics on its journey to be Net Zero by 2030.
The owners commenced with the ban of single-use plastic shopping bags by 1 January 2020, which was announced in May 2019, and has now expanded this to banning the use of balloons in all shopping centres within their portfolio.
Every year, approximately 260 million tons of plastic is discarded into the environment, locked for centuries in our landfills and oceans. It is estimated that by 2050 there will be more plastic in the ocean than there are fish, and balloons are a contributor to plastic pollution.
As partners in our mall, we encourage you to co-operate with us in this initiative, and consider theenvironment in all your business operations in order for us, collectively, to reach a Net Zero sustainability goal in the foreseeable future.
